Chapter 401
Evelyn heard Victoriaโs taunts but chose to remain silent. Instead, she admitted, "Youโre right. I donโt actually know how to play the piano."
"Why sugarcoat it? If you lack the skill, just admit it. Evelyn, is your pride that fragile? Why not confess that you canโt play?" Victoria sneered.
Before Evelyn could respond, Anthony, standing nearby, cut in. "Itโs ridiculous to entrust the venue design to someone with no musical knowledge or piano skills."
"Iโll be discussing this with the college to find a more suitable replacement."
Evelyn stayed quiet, unable to ignore the smug gleam in Victoriaโs eyes.
Victoria was trouble, always appearing wherever Evelyn went.
Anthony and his group walked away, their expressions dripping with contempt.
Victoria lingered, casting a triumphant look at Evelyn before remarking, "Youโve been on a lucky streak lately, Evelyn. But sorry to disappointโIโm back now. Your fun is over."
She thought about how sheโd had to rush to Nord City to tend to Eleanor, just to secure her position as the Montgomery familyโs young lady.
Only by doing so had she managed to keep her status. Alexander no longer pressured her to sign the adoption termination agreement.
Now, Victoria was determined to eliminate Evelynโthat nobodyโso she could marry Nathaniel without any obstacles.
With Nathaniel as her future husband, sheโd soon forget about being the Montgomery heiress.
Evelyn smirked. "Weโll see about that."
After all, she had nothing to lose. Sheโd be leaving this place soon anyway.
With that, Evelyn walked past Victoria without so much as a glance.
Victoria stomped her foot in frustration before storming out of the hall.
Approaching Anthony, she said, "I recall thereโs a special segment planned for this eventโa student performance at the end, right?"
Anthony nodded. "Yes, the college recommended two candidates. Weโll select one to perform."
"But whereโs the fun in that if itโs already decided? Given this collegeโs standards, we might as well draw lots."
"Any embarrassment would only reflect poorly on the institution."
Victoria had already devised a plan. Sheโd make sure Evelyn was chosen to perform.
Watching Evelyn flounder under the spotlight would be entertaining.
Then, Victoria could swoop in and save the situation.
It would be the perfect chance for Nathaniel to see how ordinary Evelyn was compared to her.
Back at home, Margaret had prepared a feast for Evelyn. "You must have been busy with schoolwork. Eat up," she urged.
After dinner, Evelyn turned to Christopher. "I want to learn a piano piece. Can you teach me?"
She felt an inexplicable urge to prove herself.
Christopher agreed, noticing her determination. "Whatโs sparked this sudden motivation?"
"Anthony, the head of the music team, doubts my piano skills and musical understanding. He thinks Iโm unqualified for the project. Thatโs why I want to work harder."
She needed the credits for graduation.
Christopher frowned. "Anthony said that about you?"
He cursed Anthony inwardly. What was his problem?
Heโd organized this event for Evelyn. How dare Anthony question her musical ability?
With her talent, how could she not understand music?
Evelyn nodded. "I want to lead this project. It offers a lot of credits, and Iโm eager to try."
"Alright, Evelyn. I know youโll succeed. Letโs rehearse the piece I taught you earlier," Christopher said with a smile, though his eyes darkened.
Heโd confront Anthony later. What was his issue, anyway?
