Chapter 406

Victoria Sinclair's face twisted in displeasure. "Evelyn, I'm a wealthy heiress. You could never compare to someone like me."

Evelyn Carter arched a brow, her tone dripping with indifference. "You're right. I could never match your level of shamelessness."

With that, she stepped into the elevator, leaving Victoria fuming in the lobby.

Frustration bubbled inside Victoria as she stomped her foot. She had come to visit Eleanor Whitmore at the hospital, only to be blocked by security.

Yet Evelyn had strolled right past them without so much as a second glance.

The injustice of it made Victoria's blood boil.

Still, she consoled herself with the thought of Evelyn's impending humiliation at the college's music showcase.

She could already picture itโ€”Evelyn fumbling over the piano keys, the audience whispering in pity.

The anticipation alone was delicious.

Meanwhile, Evelyn hailed a cab and headed back to campus.

Her phone buzzed mid-ride. Andrew Montgomery's name flashed on the screen.

"Evelyn, there's been a major update in Jonathan Reeves' case. The fraud charges against him have been confirmed."

His voice was steady. "He's looking at several years in prison. As for Judith Reeves, she's been sentenced to a year for assault."

Evelyn's lips pressed into a thin line. "I see. And what about the incident where Jonathan's leg was broken?"

She couldn't help but wonder how Nathaniel Whitmore had maneuvered his way out of that one.

Andrew hesitated. "There wasn't enough evidence to pursue it. Nathaniel isn't implicated."

"Of course not," Evelyn murmured. She had expected nothing less.

"Andrew, thank you for your help. I owe you coffee later. But right now, I need to rest before my afternoon lectures." She stifled a yawn.

"Take care of yourself, Evelyn. Don't push too hard," he replied before hanging up.

Once the call ended, Andrew stared at the documents in front of him.

The headline glared back at him: "Evelyn Carter is married to Nathaniel Whitmore."

The revelation had left him reeling all morning.

Suddenly, so many things made senseโ€”the odd tension between Evelyn and Nathaniel, the way Nathaniel had mobilized every resource when Evelyn was kidnapped by Walter and Beverly Simmons.

Even Evelyn's evasiveness outside the police station now had an explanation.

Andrew straightened his tie and dialed Julian Montgomery. "Got a minute? I need to ask you something."

"If it's not about Evelyn, can it wait until after work?" Julian replied distractedly.

"It is about Evelyn. What's her connection to Nathaniel?"

A beat of silence. Then Julian sighed. "You found out, huh?"

Of course he had. As a lawyer, Andrew was bound to uncover the truth eventually.

Andrew's frown deepened. "You knew. Why didn't you tell us?"

"I found out by accident, and Evelyn begged me to keep it quiet. What was I supposed to do?"

Andrew exhaled sharply. "She must have suffered something terrible in that family to want a divorce."

"You think I don't know that? Evelyn is stubbornโ€”she has her own plans. We've only just started building a real bond with her as her brothers."

Julian's voice turned firm. "If we push too hard, she'll just pull away."

Andrew's jaw tightened. "What did she get in the divorce? Money? Stocks? Propertiesโ€”what assets does she have?"

Julian hesitated. "I don't know for sure. But given Evelyn's financial independence and her pride, she probably didn't ask for much."

As a top-tier lawyer with an impeccable reputation, the thought of Evelyn walking away with nothing after a divorce was unacceptable.

Andrew clenched his fists.

Nathaniel Whitmore wasn't going to get away with this.
