Chapter 379
Evelyn barely had time to process her own words when Nathaniel's confession hit her like a thunderbolt.
"You're right," he admitted without hesitation, his voice dripping with arrogance. "I am the one who did it."
Her breath caught.
Had she misheard him?
His lips curled into a smirk as he took in her stunned expression. "Why do you look so shocked? Did you really not know it was me?"
The familiar sulk returned to his features.
She swallowed hard. "IโI thought it was Christopher."
"Christopher?" His eyes darkened instantly. "Since when do you have a brother?"
Evelyn swiftly redirected the conversation, her voice sharp. "Answer me, Nathaniel Whitmore. Why did you beat Jonathan Reeves to a pulp?"
If she had known the truth earlier, she wouldnโt have wasted her time at the hospital, subjected to Jonathan and Judithโs revolting behavior.
Nathaniel scoffed. "Why not? Do I need a reason?"
Evelyn was speechless. Because of him, she had endured days of Jonathan and Judithโs disgusting antics.
She had blamed Christopher, only to realize the real culprit was standing right in front of herโthis infuriating man!
A pillow flew straight at Nathanielโs face. "Are you out of your mind? Couldnโt you have warned me before pulling something like that? I wouldnโt have gotten involved!"
She wouldnโt have cared less if Jonathan had gone to the police.
Why? Because Nathaniel could walk through hell untouched.
Her voice trembled with fury. "Get out. I donโt want to see you right now."
Nathaniel dodged the pillow effortlessly, his gaze piercing. "Is this how you react when you find out I was the one who did it?"
He had genuinely believed her concern was for him.
She arched a brow. "My attitude depends entirely on the other personโs actions. This is what you get. Fair, donโt you think?"
His expression darkened.
"Three years ago, I married you when you were on the brink of death after that car accident. No one knew if youโd survive. And what did I get in return?" Her voice turned icy. "Only a fool makes the same mistake twice."
Nathaniel stepped closer, his voice low. "How do you know itโll be a mistake if you donโt try again?"
Evelyn could only stare at him, lost for words.
His gaze sharpened. "You still havenโt answered me. Who is this brother of yours?"
She waved a dismissive hand. "Just someone from back home."
She had no intention of revealing her family secrets to Nathanielโespecially not the fact that she had three brothers and three cousins.
Not when she was planning to leave for Nord City and start a new life.
The less he knew, the harder it would be for him to find her.
For the sake of her babies, she had to be careful.
Nathanielโs eyes narrowed dangerously. "What brother?"
As far as he knew, Evelyn was an orphan.
She shrugged. "We have a lot of relatives in the village. Theyโre my cousins."
His gaze dropped to her stomach, his tone turning stern. "Cut the act. You mean the father of the baby, donโt you?"
Her breath hitched.
Nathaniel knew?
He knew about the babies?
Since waking up, her thoughts had been consumed with worry for themโuntil Nathanielโs presence turned her into a nervous wreck, making her forget everything else.
Somewhere in the back of her mind, she had foolishly convinced herself he would never find out.
Now, reality was crashing down on her.
She had imagined this moment countless timesโNathaniel discovering the truth. She had prepared herself mentally for it.
Taking a deep breath, she steadied herself.
He only knew about the pregnancy.
Not that he was the father.
As long as she never admitted it, she could still protect them.
At least, thatโs what she told herself.
