Chapter 374

The jerk had the nerve to call Evelyn yesterday, taunting her about being a gold-digger. As if he had any right.

Fuming, she sent the picture to Nathaniel. "You're not so innocent either. Who's this backup girl now?"

But after typing it out, she thought it sounded too desperate. Too weak.

So she deleted it.

Instead, she mirrored his cold, clipped style. "Nice."

One word. That was all it took to drip with sarcasm.

People who knew how to cut deep didnโ€™t waste words.

Evelyn tossed her phone aside and forced herself back to her notes.

But focus was impossible.

Her gaze kept flicking to the silent screen, wondering how Nathaniel would react.

Nothing.

Then, finallyโ€”a notification.

Her pulse jumped before she could stop it.

But it wasnโ€™t him.

It was Jonathan.

"Evelyn, I still have the recording. The one where you admitted your brother was the real culprit."

Her stomach dropped.

She had said that. In a moment of weakness, sheโ€™d confessed.

Her fingers tightened around the phone. "What do you want?"

"Come to the hospital. Letโ€™s talk."

"We have nothing to discuss."

"If you donโ€™t show up, Iโ€™ll send this to the police. You really want your brother in jail?"

Her jaw clenched.

Fine.

She grabbed her bag and hailed a cab.

She knew exactly what this was. Blackmail.

But she wasnโ€™t defenseless. If it came down to it, sheโ€™d handle the fallout.

The hospital room was too bright.

Jonathan and Judith sat waiting, their expressions smug.

Evelyn didnโ€™t bother with pleasantries. "Get to the point."

Judithโ€™s lip curled. "That attitude wonโ€™t help you. If it werenโ€™t for your brother, my son wouldnโ€™t be here!"

Evelyn scoffed. "Mrs. Reeves, letโ€™s be clearโ€”Iโ€™ve never had feelings for your son. Not once. And I certainly never led him on. Youโ€™re delusional if you thought Iโ€™d ever be your daughter-in-law."

Why sugarcoat it? The gloves were off.

Judithโ€™s face turned red. "Then why are you still working for him? Have you no shame?"

"Correctionโ€”he begged me to stay. Ask him yourself."

She turned to Jonathan, done with Judithโ€™s dramatics.

But he just smirked.

"Evelyn, you mustโ€™ve liked me a little. Otherwise, why take a job at my small studio instead of some big corporation?"

Disgust twisted in her gut.

Sheโ€™d expected the blackmail.

But this? Pathetic.

"Whereโ€™s the recording?" she demanded, cutting straight to the chase. "Whatโ€™s your game?"
