Chapter 284

Evelyn noticed the strange look on Julian's face. Something wasn't right.

"Julian, you're not yourself today."

"Am I? Must be work stress," he deflected, avoiding her gaze.

"Go ahead. Donโ€™t you have a meeting? Iโ€™ll stay with Grandma Eleanor," Evelyn said, deciding not to push further.

He nodded. "Iโ€™ll pick you up later for your prenatal checkup."

Watching her grow closer to the Whitmores was the last thing he wanted. But he knew how deeply Evelyn cared for them.

Before the Montgomery brothers took her in, Eleanor had been the one to look after her. He couldnโ€™t just tear her away.

Once he got her out of Nord City, away from the Whitmores, everything would be settled.

Evelyn watched Julian descend the stairs, exhaling softly.

After washing some fruit, she headed toward the patientโ€™s room. The door swung open just as she approached.

Nathaniel stepped out, blocking her path. His towering frame loomed over her, intensifying the tension.

Holding the bowl of fruit, Evelyn met his piercing gaze.

He lowered his voice. "Evelyn Carter, I donโ€™t care about your personal life. But this is the hospital where my grandmother is staying. Have you considered the consequences if she catches you two?"

She swallowed the bitterness in her throat. "Iโ€™m not here to argue. Grandmaโ€™s surgery is soon. Please move."

His warm fingers wrapped around her wrist. "Do you think Iโ€™m trying to fight with you? If youโ€™re so eager to throw yourself at another man, fine. But I have one conditionโ€”donโ€™t let Grandma find out before her surgery."

She yanked her arm free. "Donโ€™t worry. I wonโ€™t tell her. Meanwhile, youโ€™re the one engaged in scandals. Maybe you should be more careful."

Nathaniel stiffened at her words, his expression darkening. "You donโ€™t get to say that. If it werenโ€™t for youโ€”"

"Enough. I donโ€™t want to hear about your engagement," she cut him off.

Did she have anything to do with it being called off? How could he blame her?

She squared her shoulders. "Mr. Whitmore, from now on, letโ€™s only discuss Grandma. Nothing else. Once her surgery is over, weโ€™ll finalize the divorce and go our separate ways."

Frustration coiled inside him as he studied her resolute expression.

Earlier, heโ€™d nearly lost control when he saw her in Julianโ€™s arms.

But why? Why did her actions affect him like this?

It shouldnโ€™t matter who she was with.

Yet, he couldnโ€™t shake the turmoil she stirred in him. This was unfamiliar. Uncontrollable.

He released her, his gaze conflicted. "Evelyn, Iโ€™ll say this onceโ€”you and Julian arenโ€™t right for each other."

His misunderstanding amused her. She tilted her head, a smirk playing on her lips. "Nathaniel Whitmore, are you jealous?"
