Chapter 154

Though Julian Montgomery despised Nathaniel Whitmore, he maintained his professionalism. He was here for Evelyn Carter's sake, and he wouldn't disappoint her.

Nathaniel finally broke the silence. "When will you finalize the surgical plan?"

The plan was critical. Cardiac surgeries were notoriously complex, with unpredictable complications. A meticulous strategy was non-negotiable.

Julian checked his watch. "I'll return in two days with a detailed proposal. Rushing this would be reckless."

Victoria Sinclair nodded in agreement. "He's right. The surgery shouldn't happen until the end of the month. We have time."

Julian glanced at the door. "I should go."

He needed to leave before Evelyn arrived. Running into her now would complicate everything. How would he explain his presence?

"Julian," Victoria called, stepping forward. "Since you're here, why not join us for lunch? Despite our past... misunderstandings, we're about to be family. We should clear the air."

His expression remained cold. "No need. I'm busy."

Without another word, he strode out.

Victoria followed briefly but stopped, watching him disappear down the hallway. She turned back to Nathaniel, satisfaction gleaming in her eyes.

"You see, Nate? I told you. He may act indifferent, but he cares. He refused openly, yet he still came to review Eleanor's condition."

Nathaniel's gaze lingered on Julian's notes left on the desk, conflicted.

Eleanor's attending physician, still awed, interjected, "Mr. Whitmore, he truly is the best cardiac surgeon in Nord City. His observations pinpointed details we missed."

"But only he can execute the procedure," the doctor admitted.

"Obviously," Victoria said, beaming. "Julian is exceptional. If he operates, Eleanor will recover swiftly."

Nathaniel exhaled. "Then proceed as he advises."

It was their best option.

As they left the office, Victoria stole a glance at Nathaniel. His lack of objection to Julian handling the surgeryโ€”did that mean acceptance?

Her heart fluttered as they waited for the elevator.

The doors slid openโ€”and there stood Evelyn, frozen mid-step.

She had taken her time preparing fruit for Eleanor, assuming they'd still be in the ward. Instead, she found them here.

Evelyn recovered quickly. She had planned to find Julian afterward to discuss Eleanor's condition.

But fate had other plans.

The air thickened with tension as their eyes met.

Victoria's lips curled. "Ms. Carter," she purred, "what a surprise. What brings you here?"
