Chapter 264
A woman from the countryside in the group spoke up sharply, "Evelyn, you're being utterly ungrateful. If the Simmons family hadn't taken you in, do you honestly think you'd have survived this long?"
Beverly sat on the ground, wailing dramatically. "Evelyn, I went through all the trouble of arranging a marriage for you. If you refuse, thatโs your choice."
"But why drag the police into this and accuse us of human trafficking? How cruel can you be?"
"Exactly," another chimed in. "In our town, matchmaking is tradition. No one sees it as trafficking."
Priscilla, Giselleโs mother, stepped forward, her eyes locked onto Evelyn. "Evelyn, my daughter Giselle is set to marry Edward."
"If you report him to the police now and get him arrested, how are we supposed to hold the wedding?"
Giselle, standing beside Edward, pleaded, "Evelyn, could you please go to the station and ask them to release Walter and the others?"
Evelynโs expression remained icy. "Ah, I almost forgotโyou all took Vincentโs bribes too, didnโt you?"
"Since every single one of you accepted dirty money, itโs only fair you all answer for it at the station."
Giselleโs face tightened. She quickly defended herself, "It was a legal transaction! I didnโt take any tainted money."
"Enough, Evelyn," Beverly cut in. "Giselle is carrying my grandchild. Donโt upset the baby."
Evelyn smirked. "Are you sure that child is Edwardโs?"
Priscillaโs voice rose in outrage. "Whose else would it be? Stop spouting nonsense!"
Evelyn glanced at Julian, then pulled out her phone, playing a video.
"Giselle was caught in an affair. She got pregnant to secure her status but was kicked out."
"After multiple past abortions, she was terrified of another one."
"So she rushed to find a husband."
Julian then handed over a stack of documents. "These are Giselleโs medical records from our hospital."
Beverly squinted at the papers before turning to Edward. "I forgot my glasses. Read this for me."
Edward paled as he scanned the pages. "Giselle, you never mentioned abortions."
Priscilla and Giselle froze, panic flashing across their faces.
Giselle blurted, "These are fake!"
"Absolutely!" Priscilla snapped. "Youโre just trying to avoid paying child support!"
Evelyn waved her phone. "Edward, I have proof Giselle was seeing other men."
"Congratsโyour fiancรฉe has a habit of cheating."
Giselle and Priscilla exchanged frantic looks. "Edward, think it over. Weโre leaving."
Beverly blocked their path. "Not so fast. Return the money I gave you first."
Priscilla scoffed. "That money is my daughterโs. Weโre keeping it."
Beverly crossed her arms. "Not until a paternity test confirms itโs Edwardโs child."
When Beverly tried to stop them, a scuffle broke out between her and Priscilla.
Watching the chaos, Evelyn laughedโjustice served at last.
