Chapter 347
The courtyard erupted in squeals and cheers, trapping Evelyn in an awkward position. Her juniors were fueling the excitement without understanding the situation.
While Evelyn frowned in discomfort, Jonathan's eyes sparkled with anticipation. "Evelyn, what's stopping you?"
Memories of that upscale restaurant flashed through her mind. "Jonathan, don't you already have a girlfriend?"
He should at least admit he'd been on blind dates, especially since one woman had even met his parents.
"I don't, Evelyn. You must have misunderstood," he denied quickly.
Just then, a group of figures appeared at the stairway near the administration building.
Nathaniel happened to glance out the window, spotting Evelyn standing outside with a man kneeling before her. From the back, it clearly was Jonathan Reeves, owner of the campus studio.
Theodore chuckled knowingly. "Ah, young love. These public confessions are quite common on campus."
Nathaniel's eyes narrowed dangerously. "It would be common... if he weren't proposing to my wife. Explain this."
Theodore's smile froze. Rubbing his eyes, he confirmed the woman was indeed Evelyn Carter-Whitmore!
He remembered clearly when rumors spread about Evelyn having a sugar daddy. Nathaniel had slammed their marriage certificate on his desk as proof. But the Whitmore family had insisted on keeping it quiet, so no one knew the college's most eligible bachelor was actually married.
Mopping his forehead with a handkerchief, Theodore stammered, "I-I'll call security to break this up immediately."
Internally, he cursed the idiot who dared propose to Nathaniel Whitmore's wife. The fool should know his place!
Meanwhile, the crowd swelled as more students gathered. Evelyn felt completely overwhelmed.
The situation had spiraled beyond her control. She thought she'd made herself perfectly clear to Jonathan before.
Seeing no alternative, Evelyn looked Jonathan squarely in the eyes. "Jonathan, I was married before."
His face fell. "Really? Using the same excuse twice to reject me?"
"I'm serious, Jonathan. I was married. It's the truth."
Studying her expression, Jonathan realized she wasn't lying. Could it be true?
When he hesitated, Evelyn continued, "I took three years off school because of my marriage. I only returned after my divorce."
"I... see." Awkwardness colored his features.
This revelation shocked him. He'd thought she was joking this whole time!
Yet the memory of Evelyn's wealthy brothersโwho could casually spend millionsโgave him pause. So what if she was divorced? She was still filthy rich!
After quick calculations, he declared loudly, "Evelyn, I don't care if you're divorced! That changes nothing about my feelings!"
"And I should thank your ex-husband for letting you go. You're too precious for me to lose." His response stunned herโthis wasn't the reaction she'd anticipated at all.
From what she'd overheard from Judith, Jonathan would never accept a divorced woman.
"Say yes! Say yes!" The crowd began chanting again, their voices rising in a deafening chorus.
