Chapter 60

Evelyn lowered her lashes, feigning indifference. "Thank you." She saw no point in correcting Nathaniel's current misconception.

Her polite response only ignited Nathaniel's fury. His lips pressed into a thin line as he warned, "Evelyn, watch your behavior. Don't get too familiar with other men."

"We're divorced," Evelyn countered quietly.

"Until we finalize it at city hall, you're still my wife." Nathaniel's voice turned icy. "Unless you've lost all self-respect, you won't flirt with anyone else."

"Then let's pick a date and go to city hall."

Nathaniel ripped off his tie in frustration. "You're doing this again? You know Eleanor doesn't want us to divorce. Is this your new threat?"

"I'm not threatening you." Evelyn met his gaze steadily. "We can keep it secret. Eleanor doesn't need to know before her surgery."

"Do you think Eleanor's a fool?" Nathaniel grabbed Evelyn's chin roughly. "You're desperate to divorce me. Is it because you can't wait to marry your new lover? What if Eleanor finds out?"

His grip tightened painfully on her jaw.

Evelyn's eyes narrowed. "I'm just clearing the way for Ms. Sinclair. Wouldn't want to keep her waiting."

"This has nothing to do with Victoria!" Nathaniel had no intention of marrying Victoria anyway. His gaze turned contemptuous. "I'll say this once - if your reckless behavior upsets Eleanor, both you and your new man will pay dearly."

Evelyn's heart plunged into icy depths. To Nathaniel, she was nothing but a shameless woman. That fleeting protective moment earlier had been pure illusion.

No, he hadn't been protective at all. He'd simply dumped the problem back on her. She'd been foolish to imagine otherwise.

Evelyn slapped his hand away. "Don't worry about that. I care more about Eleanor than anyone. To ensure she gets that surgery, I'd do anything."

As she turned to grab her bag from the sofa, Nathaniel seized her wrist. "Stay right here."

"Let go!" Evelyn struggled, her bag tumbling to the floor.

A white container rolled out. The sight made her gasp.

Oh no!

Nathaniel forced her to face him. "You'd do anything for Eleanor's surgery?"

Evelyn held his gaze. "Yes."

Nathaniel's eyes turned flinty. "Eleanor said she'll only have the surgery if you're pregnant."

Pregnant? Evelyn's gaze flickered to the folic acid bottle on the floor. She froze, speechless.

"Cat got your tongue? You were so talkative earlier."

Remembering Eleanor's hospital words, anger surged through Evelyn.

"What do you want me to say? Huh? That we should sleep together and get me pregnant?"

"Absolutely not," Nathaniel refused instantly. He knew this game - she was trying reverse psychology.

"There's another way," Evelyn said quietly.

Nathaniel raised an eyebrow. "I'm listening."
